Thinning Hair In Women: Causes & Treatments

09 June 2022

When people think of thinning hair the majority of people think of this as a male problem, however, it’s far from that.

According to a 2021 study by Concept Hair Mag, more than 4 in every 10 women have experienced hair loss to some extent.

The Causes Behind Thinning Hair In Women

At Optima Hair we have an average of 8 – 10 consultations every day, with 70% of them now being women. The majority of cases we see regarding thinning hair are in relation to hormonal changes. These changes are often particularly noticeable at the front and top of the scalp. Thinning hair in women is usually nothing to worry about, however, it can be upsetting. In fact, according to the NHS, we can lose between 50 – 100 hairs per day without even noticing.

A variety of factors can trigger hair loss in women. Some are factors outside of the body such as taking certain medications. Alternatively stressful life events such as surgery can also play their part. On the other hand, thinning hair in women can also be caused by factors inside the body. This includes factors such as a thyroid problem, a shift in hormones or a recent pregnancy.

There is also a chance that thinning hair may be caused by genetics. Does your close family have a similar or more significant amount of hair loss? If so this may very well be a factor behind hair loss. Female pattern hair loss is the most common genetic condition, alongside androgenic alopecia. Women experiencing female pattern hair loss may notice a widening at the top of the head, often starting in a woman’s 40s or 50s.

Thinning hair in women can also be self-inflicted. Hairstyles too tight such as cornrows and braids can cause hair loss called traction alopecia. Furthermore, chemical treatments, bad brushes, and irons can result in hair damage and loss. Luckily for many, the above issues can be reversed with high-quality treatment to avoid further hair loss.

Treatment For Thinning Hair In Women

It can be quite simple to treat hair loss in women if caught early enough. However unfortunately for those who have lost too much hair then a hair system is the only alternative left. At Optima Hair we have over 50 years of experience with hair systems. We offer a range of hair systems designed to give every woman and man the ultimate goal, a full set of hair which looks natural and feels great. It doesn’t matter whether your hair loss is caused by alopecia, menopause, or female pattern baldness, there is a hair system for you.

As well as hair systems there are several other different types of treatment available to women who are experiencing thinning hair. Laser therapy can halt hair loss within months, and promote new growth within 4-6 weeks. Laser therapy can be used alongside stimulants such as minoxidil, to really give a two-pronged attack on hair loss.

For a more immediate result, hair fibres are a fantastic solution. They are electrostatically charged keratin fibres, they cling to the hair and create a thicker, fuller look in just minutes. It’s a brilliant solution that can give an instant confidence boost to its users. It simply washes out when you’re ready and is an effective and inexpensive way of making you feel more confident.

We even have shampoos that alone will not stop hair loss, but are a great add on to our programmes. They are perfect for ensuring you deep clean the scalp so that any stimulants used can be most effective. You can be safe in the knowledge that they have minimal ingredients and certainly none that could harm your hair or scalp. At Optima we also offer conditioners that are oil-free, helping to make sure your scalp is in optimal health.

It’s important to remember if you have been suffering from thinning hair you won’t see instant results, don’t expect to see your hair back within a week. In this fast-paced world, we all want everything as soon as possible. Unfortunately, hair loss is something which you have to be patient with, allowing time for your hair to grow. Sometimes it can take the same amount of time to thicken up hair as it takes to thin it out.

One thing we do know is that with so many women being affected by female pattern hair loss, androgenic alopecia or traction alopecia, from the hairstyles they have sported for years, there is a hair loss solution out there for them. Here at Optima Hair we make time for our female clients and become friends with them. We are entirely committed to finally finding them a hair loss solution which will cover their needs and give their confidence back to face the world again.

After all, what are we without confident women in our lives?
